Irena Sarwar
Irena Sarwar creates dynamic and evocative art that is driven by instinct, mood, and imagination. Her practice is spontaneous, enabling ideas to develop organically as she works and embracing a creative flow led by intuition.
Irena’s work often centres on the female form, through which she explores identity, emotion, and contrast through bold visuals. She is particularly drawn to the balance between light and dark, creating pieces that are either vividly colourful and energetic or darker and more introspective (often containing layered personal meaning).
Irena describes her artistic style as vibrant, meaningful, and varied, with each piece intentionally distinct from the last. She is especially proud of a recent piece, which explores emotional contrast through character storytelling. This work features a melancholic theatrical figure inspired by French 1980s performance clowns that fused traditional clowning with more experimental artistic expression. Set against a bright, candy-coloured background, Irena’s artwork reflects her interest in pairing narrative symbolism with contrasting bold imagery.
Although inspired partly by visual platforms and digital imagery, Irena’s strongest influence comes from her own imagination. She approaches each blank canvas as an opportunity to experiment, often working instinctively rather than planning every detail. This process allows her to create work that feels honest, expressive, and emotionally connected to her own experiences and perspectives.
Irena often writes the story or meaning behind her work directly onto the back of a canvas, reinforcing her belief that art should carry both emotional depth and visual impact.
Irena is currently focused on expanding her technical skills, experimenting with new materials, and developing a distinctive artistic voice. Her long-term goal is to become a tattoo artist, using her creativity and storytelling ability to create meaningful, personalised designs for others. For Irena, art is both a form of self-expression, a way to connect with others (through sharing experiences or evoking emotions), and a means of creating something that people can relate to and find comfort in.
